Letter to the editor

I just sent this letter to the editor of the Star telegram in Ft. Worth. Bet a nickle they ignore it.

Why should we lose our constitutional rights because Mexico has gangster problems?
Recently trial balloons have been floated by the Obama Administration advocating “control” of weapons and blaming the US gun shops for Mexican armed gangs. From what I have seen on TV, the photos and news clips appear to show fully Automatic weapons (i.e. machine guns) being used by the Mexican Cartels. As near as I can determine the last “machine gun” produced in the United States for civilian consumption occurred about 1986. Only Law enforcement and the military can buy new fully automatic weapons produced and sold in the USA.
The “Look alike” AR-15s and other semi- automatic “assault” rifles cannot easily, or safely, be converted to full automatic because the receivers (the part that holds the bolt and trigger) have thinner walls than their military counterparts and making the machine cuts to produce full automatic weapons from such guns is not safe or practical. Now where are the cartels getting their machine guns? Well, if you can smuggle drugs from all over Central and South America you can smuggle guns. Another source is most likely the Mexican Army. Why come to the USA and pay 5 or 10 thousand dollars for a sub machine gun (which is specially licensed and accounted for and tracked all the way), when you can pay a Mexican private or deserter 100 bucks for his weapon. I am convinced the Obama party is doing what all governments do when they do not trust their citizens to go along with their agenda. They are going to try to grab or tightly control access to arms,
using Mexican violence as the excuse. I have a question. Why should I, or any other American give up one bit of my freedom because an administration will not control the border or provide proper security along that border?
The Second Amendment is not about Guns per se. It is about a right guaranteed by the founding fathers- the right of self defense, against predators, criminals and in the last resort, government tyrants. I ask again, why should we willingly give up one scrap of our constitutional rights, when our elected officials have neglected their oath to that constitution? They have failed to secure our borders, enforce our laws or make any attempt to protect our cities from illegal foreign thugs. They attack anyone who demands that those laws be enforced or anyone who attempts to enforce them.
I think it is time for “government control”, not “gun control”. It is time we vote out of office anyone, of any party, that does not demand complete enforcement of our laws, security for our borders, and place the bill of rights above all else.
