Flight to Bu Prang

The June26 Washington Times had an article by Scott Johnson, telling of the communists religious persecution of the Montagnards in the Central Highlands. In march of this year The VC came in the "dead of night" , with heavy machinery and demolished one of the first Christian churches built in the Highlands. The large stone church at Ban Me Thuot, was a powerful symbol to local Christians." I guess the VC really hate the montagnards especially because they fought with the U.S.
It was probably in Nov.1969,that I was crewing Gator 586 on a single ship mission to the Bu Prang Special Forces camp near the Cambodian border. After departing Ankhe we flew cross country and picked up highway 14, than south to Ban Me Thuot for refueling and than started west to Bu Prang. On the way I saw a couple of F4 Phantoms dive bombing the jungle. As we started our descent I looked below and noticed a large group on troops charging across an open field. There where two Charlie model gunships circling overhead, and the red smoke from their rocket pods indicating flechette rockets. and I saw some explosions among those troops. amazing that the nva ? caught in the open. Then we were over that and on into Bu Prang. Nobody mentioned it. I guess it was just another day at the war, but I think that there was a big Mike Force operation during the siege around that time.Who would have imagined this area would be the initial invasion route when the takedown began in 1975?
