Re: National Vietnam War Museum

: it's in the DNA, Tom! ::f

: I'd bet a c-note that the 81st/119th is the
: longest-tenured company-level combat unit of
: the war.
: seems 'boiut every other one rotated out.

: the 57th AHC left Holloway a couple of years
: after the 119th, but I think, didn't make
: the scene until '65 or so. and I do believe
: the 114th, 117th, 118th and 120th were
: similarly rotated out, but haven't
: researched it yet. Doc?

You lost a C-note.

First item, got to be careful not to confuse 57th Trans Co (CH-21) with 57th AHC. 57th Trans Co arrived (with the 8th Trans) on the USS Core in Dec61 and became the 120th AHC in June 1963. The 57th AHC that was assigned to the 52d CABn, located Kontum, arrived in-country 1967. Two entirely different units.

Of the early five Army aviation units, the 119th actually had the shortest total time in Vietnam.

8th/117th was Dec61 to Mar72 or 10years 3months.

33rd/118th was Sep62 to Aug71 or 8years 11months
***

81st/119th was Sep62 to Dec70 or 8years 3months (and actually Oct70, but who's counting?)
***

57th/120th was Dec61 to Oct72 or 10years 10months
***

93rd/121st was Jan62 to Dec70 or 8years 11months

It turns out we apparently went through this exercise a few years ago and the numbers were written on a sheet of paper stuck in the front of my Stanton's Vietnam Order of Battle.
