Never put a single round through it Gene. I'm not sure I ever touched it, come to think of it. The HHC CO was a mustang Captain who was a pretty good guy, liked me for some reason. Maybe because I once removed a thorn from his paw.

Actually, I handled his correspondence for him, which I was pretty good at, and I made him look good. The first letter he gave me to type and mail after I showed up, I read it, closed his office door, and said to him, "You cannot send this." "Why not?" "Because the Colonel will think you are illiterate." "Oh. Well, fix it." He knew it. I think maybe he WAS illiterate.

So I did, and he got somebody else to do the routine office crap while I handled his contact with the outside world for him. Lord knows what happened to him after I left.

Great duty all around. Unit was a Signal Bn in CENTAG, actually half German. Bn Sgt Major used to show up in the field with a squirt gun in his holster. Nobody dozed off when the SGM has walking around.

I was killing time in the woods on an alert one day (we had two or three alerts a month), demonstrating the manual of arms with a .45 pistol, and he snuck up behind me and caught some of my act. Next thing I knew I was posting the guard and training the peons on the .45 pistol a couple of nights a week. They didn't have a lot of guys familiar with weapons in the unit. Also, I think he liked having Vietnam guys around; there weren't too many of us there.

Great, great beer & schnitzel. And the wurst stands everywhere? Wurst and a beer for about a Mark, maybe two? C'mon. And most of the Germans are really great folks.
