Holy smoke, does that map bring back memories, Bob. Whew.

I didn't remember that it was FSB 6, but I sure remember the initial assault up that cut between the ridgelines, early March 69. The contour lines are crystal clear, can't be any place else.

We came in from the NW, through the middle of the cut. Pretty wide, actually. Started taking fire from the ridge to the north, my side, about under the "ok" on the "Ngok Ring Rua" on the map. Muzzle flashes everywhere, way out but a LOT of them. I fired, shouted, we aborted, and I threw a smoke, too late; (I guess we were lead... maybe 2nd... probably 2nd), then we came around again for another shot at it. Coming around, I handed a smoke to the nearest grunt, told him to throw it when I opened up again on the retry, knew they were still there and getting ready for us. Wanted a good mark for the guns.

Sure enough, more flashes from the ridgeline, I announced and opened up (right order this time), and the grunt pitched the smoke out the door... pin and all. Sheesh.

Scary times.
