Had a sales manager a couple of years ago start his own competing company while he was still on our payroll, Stephanie.

The day he finally resigned, I looked at the computer bag he had with him and said to him, "Fine, I'll take that laptop that belongs to the company." He turned pale and handed it to me.

On the computer were: His business plan; his calendar for the last year, documenting the time he spent on his startup; credit card expenses billed to us that were his; customer information stolen from us; correspondence in which he bragged about how he was screwing us; his corporate records showing the company's startup date months before; the works, in other words, all neatly organized.

He paid us every month for two years under an agreement to avoid criminal prosecution.

As my dad used to say, "If they weren't stupid, they wouldn't be crooks."
