I remember when one of our ACs took a fragment in the nose from a round that clipped the edge of his seat armor west of Dak To. The SF medic who looked at it offered to fill out the Purple Heart form; the AC (Sorry, I don't remember the name) turned him down. I get the impression that this was more the norm in most types of units. Only the Kerry types seem to have tried to milk the system.
