In Response To: Mike Novosel, CMOH ::f ()

Am in Denver and just got online .Got word from a friend via email that Mike had died. He was the instructor who trained me to be an Instrument Instructor in late 1967 and early 1968 at hunter AAF. mike was a good friend and stayed in touch with me over the years. He came on board the 091 committee at my urging. He was a great Army Aviator and will be missed. What may not be known is that Mike came in for wars. When I was complainant once about the number of instruments he covered on me during one flight he said" when I learned to fly, All we had was needle ball and airspeed and they'd cover the airspeed to simulate frozen systems and I had to learn to tell airspeed by the wind whistling thru the wires, Now this helicopter is talking to you, listen to it" and that began a process that made me one heck of an instrument pilot and a pretty good instructor. As I said, Mike came in for wars. in the early 1940s he was flying p39 fighters and ended the war as a captain flying a B-29 over the USS Missouri in Tokyo bay at the surrender of the Japanese. During the Korean war he came back to active duty and ended the war as a LT. Col Flying B-26 attack bombers. in the early 1960s he was a capt with southern airways and wanted to return for the Vietnam conflict. He told me the USAF said they were knee deep in Lt. Cols and would not bring him to active duty so he joined the Army as a Warrant Officer. He intended to get out after his first Nam tour but found he was in the early stages of Glaucoma and got waivers to stay on active duty and won the MOH during his second tour. we remained friends and once at a quad A in Ft.Worth he said 2 of his proudest accomplishments as an IP was 2 of his students doing well. Cody ended up as Commander of Army Aviation and I ended up as an army test pilot at Bell helicopter. That puffed my chest up a lot-)
Anyway Mike will be missed but mostly Mike served as a bridge between the old Army Air Corps and the Modern Aviation Branch. He helped to build both and as such left us a lot to be proud of and will set the standard for Army Aviators for the next century.
God's speed Mike.
Slow Salute
