It is a beautiful place.
Last June when I was sitting in a small boat in the middle of the Mekong river crossing from Thailand to Laos I had this thought. "What the F... are you doing?" Then after some other thoughts and uncomfortable moments I looked at the Jungle ahead and realized how beautiful it really is.
A lot of Laos is very much like the Pleiku area or at least like the area around Dak To and the corner area where Cambodia, Laos and VN meet. Especially the Northern areas along the Mekong river and Luang Pra Bang.
The other SE asia area that reminded me most of VN in 67 is Nothern Burma (Minamar). The rice paddys and the small foothills there are very much like the area around Quinon (sp) on the VN coast except there is no ocean or sea nearby. Very pretty scenery and the people are just people like everyone else. Not gooks or dinks or slopes or anything like that. They do not fear us now they fear their own government at least in Northern Burma.
The people in Laos are more ambitious but locked in tradition so much that the biggest obstacle for the young people trying to get an education or a career in non-low tech areas is their parents. Most of the young students at the Lao American College in Vientiene told me they did not want their parents to know that they had dreams and ambitions to work with computers or even get a higher education.

Anyway I got a bit carried away with the beautiful scenery concept but what they heck.

: gorgeous, Jim- I'd guess most of us have once
: and again thought about what a beautiful
: place it was, or would have been, absent the
: war, and now, absent the Commies.
