You are right BK. It took damned near as high a GT score to be a 67N as it did to be a pilot, BUT besides passing a class "A" flight physical ( the same thing they gave the astronauts), you had to prove to them that you were crazy. Most good CEs were too sane to make good pilots, that wire walking idiot, Tom Frankenfield excepted. Ever heard of some dude standing on the skids at 1500 feeet and 90 kts without a monkey strap, wiping the windshield? it used to startle the hell out of new pilots.
Anyway, my hat's off to you guys who were gunners and CEs. Besides the courage it took to fly in back with me at the controls, I can remember days when landing after dark the pilots would be in club or hootch fighting off the shakes from the days action; I'd walk down to the revetments and play MO again and find you guys still busy with flashlights, rags and wrenchs getting ready for the next days madness.
