They are in DC over 4th of July weekend, Lumpy. See http://www.vhpareunion.org and follow yer nose.
I am blowing thru for one night just to see Mike Bonthuis, have not seen him since VHPA was in Las Vegas a couple of years ago. I need to be back to do a parade at home on the 4th; my cousin and I do a Vietnam version of a MASH-type martini/golf clubs Jeep thing that's a big hit.
The Galloway reception was very nicely done. Mostly DC Press-types who have worked with or around Joe for years. I gave Joe a framed photo that I took of him at West Point about 10 years ago. He's sitting on a stone bench near the Kosciusko Monument that has the word "D E T E R M I N A T I O N" chiseled into it. Our coin, with his words, "God's Own Lunatics" is set into the bottom corner of the photo. I told him it was from the pilots and crews of his personal air taxi service in the Central Highlands. He got it.
I sat for quite a while with a pal of Joe's, Genl. Julius Becton. An 80-yr-old retired 3-star who spent 40 yrs in the Army, from 1944 to 1984. A Black man who rode out the segregated Army, then helped to integrate the Army. WWII, Korea, Vietnam, then everything in between and after. I had the feeling that he had my number about 3 minutes after we met.
A lot of other Galloway-type great folks there. And, now that he is a bachelor again, a fair number of starry-eyed women about half his age. I never liked that summanabitch.
