Lawyers

I had some legal work done recently by a local lawyer (who is not a veteran) and, while we were dealing with things, he got word that his son, a high school senior, had been accepted at the US Military Academy, West Point.

When we concluded our business, I gave him, for his son, a copy of Ron Carey's THE WAR ABOVE THE TREES, a copy of Larry Gwin's BAPTISM, and a coin.

He sent his invoice a few days later, $500 for services rendered, with the next line a credit of $500 for "Your Service to Our Country"; Total Amount: ZERO.

I sent him a check anyway, with thanks, but saying I couldn't accept that kind of thing. He said he was going to shred the check.

We agreed today that he would tear up the check and I would send a contribution to Fisher House, residential facilities where the families of our troops can stay when their service member is undergoing treatment in our military hospitals. So Fisher House today received a contribution in the amount of the legal fees, In Memory of John C. Schiffhauer, 119th Assault Helicopter Co., KIA - LZ Swinger March 1, 1969.

So, anyway, there are at least two good lawyers around. He's one, and we can begin to discuss who the other one is some other time.
