Bob,

Even when the mustang comes out in the W-3 & W-4 we will still be in trouble, because they have been muted for so long that they are afraid of becoming exposed to the ire and repression of the RLO's.

I continually point out the example of my being shot down the last time. I was being covered by Cobras on their first Combat Assault mission in the Highlands. They were breaking 3/4 mile behind me and 1500 feet AGL, and they had me covered. They could not see the enemy that was blasting the bejeezus out of me and my crew from in front of and under my rotor system. Ask Deacon, he was spitting nails that day, and he nearly wanted to shoot down the cobras for not doing the job that they were sent to do. REMEMBER THE PINK PUSSIES MONIKER THAT WE STUCK THEM WITH, WELL THIS IS WHY THEY GOT IT! That has carried forward to Desert Storm and Afganistan and beyond. Remember the Chinook that landed in the Al Quida camp where we lost the NCO who was assisinated after he fell off of the back gate? Well the Apache's were covering them from nearly two miles away, and there was no recon of the landing area before the approach of the chinook. The same is the fate of our UTTAS today, the Apache's are covering them from so far away that they can't get any coverage when they are on the ground. Our nation needs some small birds that will fly circles around our landing slick birds and shoot the shit out of the enemy that is under the rotar system or in front of the aircraft. The insanity of it all makes slick aircraft and Chinooks very vulnerable when doing an assault, and the fast rope added to that multiplies the time that the helicopters are exposed, and the fast rope just puts the helicopters into the zap zone while they are hovering. I think that they have it all wrong and I have written to several about it. Nothing changes!

HISTORY & LESSONS LOST is a fact of life, and our young helicopter pilots are doomed to relearn the lessons that we had solved over 40 years ago.
