The long-awaited sequel to We Were Soldiers Once…and Young, by co-authors Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and Joseph L. Galloway, will be published on August 19 by HarperCollins Publishers, New York.

The new book, titled WE ARE SOLDIERS STILL: A Journey Back to the Battlefields of Vietnam, has already won high praise in advance reviews by Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews. Publishers Weekly gave the book a rare starred review.

Publishers Weekly in its review said, “It would be a monumental task for Moore and Galloway to top their classic 1992 memoir We Were Soldiers Once…and Young. But they come close in this sterling sequel, which tells the backstory of two of the Vietnam War’s bloodiest battles…their first book and a 1993 ABC-TV documentary that brought them back to the battlefield.”

HarperCollins is announcing a first printing of 100,000 copies of We Are Soldiers and clearly believes the new book is bound for the Bestseller List. Moore and Galloway’s first book spent 18 weeks on the New York times Bestseller List in 1993 and 1994 and has, to date, sold more than 1.3 million copies in six different U.S. editions as well as foreign editions in Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese.

The publisher, on the book jacket, says of We Are Soldiers:

“In this powerful sequel…Galloway and Moore bring us up-to-date with the brave cadre of soldiers first introduced in their best-selling memoir. A journey of reflection told in gritty and vivid detail and imbued with reverence for the comrades they have never forgotten.

“We Are Soldiers Still ponders the impact of this crucial battle—and the war itself—on the authors, the military and the nation. At its heart, it recounts an unusual homecoming in which soldiers on both sides return to the Ia Drang Valley to look back—and forward.”

Also being released on August 19 is a Harper Audio six-CD six and a half-hour talking book version of We Are Soldiers Still which was recorded by Galloway in a Texas recording studio last month.

Moore and Galloway will launch the book on the day it is published with a week-long book tour in Alabama and Georgia that will take the two to Birmingham, Montgomery, Maxwell Airbase, Fort Rucker, Auburn, and Fort Benning/Columbus, Ga.

Galloway will do a solo book tour in his native Texas doing talks and appearances at bookstores in Dallas on September 2; at Fort Hood on September 3; in Austin on September 4; San Antonio on September 5, and his hometown of Refugio on September 6.

The co-authors will make joint appearances in Chicago September 17-20 and again in Washington, D.C., November 4-9 and in Atlanta November 10-11.

They look forward to seeing old friends and comrades from the 1st Cavalry Division, their home in the Army, on the tour.
