: Doc,
: Everything I have read and and seen about the
: history, the original bunch were
: "Flying Bananas" and that was
: where. Capt.Holloway got killed and thus the
: name Camp Holloway was born. And
: then..........along came the Hueys not to
: long after that. I think that was it unless
: my CRS is in gear. Anyway, 119th is suppose
: to be the oldest. You guys have reserched it
: better that I have I'm sure............

Carl, the 8th and 57th Trans. Cos. (which became the 117th and 120th AHCs) arrived in Vietnam in December 1961. The 33rd, 81st, and 93rd Trans. Cos. (which became 118th, 119th, and 121st AHCs) arrived in September 1962. The 81st became operational early in October. So the 119th is one of the first units in.

CWO Charles E. Holloway, flying a CH-21, was KIA on a CA on 22 Dec 1962, and Camp Holloway was named for him on 4 July 1963. The US government would not put "Vietnam" on his gravestone, so one of his pals bought a bronze marker with Army Aviator wings and "Vietnam" on it.

The CH-21 "Transportation" companies were all redesignated as Assault Helicopter Companies and re-equipped with Hueys in June 1963. We had a pretty good run compared to most other units.
