When Shakey and I get together, sometimes someone will say something like, "So you guys were in the service together?"

If I think they might get it, I say something like "Yep. We sat back-to-back with machineguns in the doors of a Huey helicopter in Vietnam."

Talk about "riding the river." So far, that sentence has left the ones who do "get it" pretty much speechless.

To this day I silently judge people by whether I'd sit back-to-back with them, and there are damned few who make the cut. Most of them are right here.
