Got this little tid-bit from Jim Irwin Croc 2 1964-1965

October 15, 1964 to October 15,1965

I was in the first or second platoon for 60 days and then in the third platoon where

I served as Armament Officer and pilot/AC, call sign Crocodile 2

Historic note: In 1964 the Gun Call sign was “Widow Maker” until Westmoreland visited after taking over in late ‘64. He didn’t care for it, so we became “Alligator Red” and subsequently, “Crocodiles”. The gun platoon patch remained the same—upright alligator/crocodile with pods/guns, helmet and cigar—stayed the same, only the name changed.
