Gene, I ended up as a HHC company clerk in a Signal Bn at Coleman Barracks in Mannheim for 9 months in 1970. CO came to me one day and said, "Kilpatrick, we need an M-60 gunner for alerts and you're the only one qualified in the company."

I told him I'd be happy to do it, but that I had hurt my wrist and I had a physical profile in my pocket that said I couldn't lift more than 25 lbs.

He ended up giving me an ammo-bearer who picked up the M-60 and the ammo in the arms room while I was drawing my .45 pistol, a jeep (with heat), and a driver. It was like having a caddy. The rest of the company rode into the field in back of deuce-and-a-halfs and threw stuff at my jeep.

Life was good for one of the few Vietnam guys in the Bn.
