What makes us Remember

To remember Viet Nam as to what we saw is only a small part of what it was like. The smell of things can bring you back to that long ago time. The feel of dirt and sand in your hair after a helicopter passed by you. The heat that would bake your skin and the way our clothes were always wet from sweat. The damn red dirt of Pleiku that would cover everything. The cold chill at night when the tempeture dropped below 80 degrees. That cold water shower that felt so good then that would kill us now. The taste of warm water or even worse Kool-Aid out of that plastic canteen. I remember the smell of opening my mail because it was the smell of home. The cigarettes that tasted like lighter fluid because it was so hard to light them while flying. I hear a helicopter now I stop and watch it pass. Then I didn't even look up. You guys can probablly come up with hundreds of other things that you remember. Maybe that's why we remember because there are so many things that won't let us forget. It wasn't the best of times but I won't have missed it for anything.
