Re: Couple of questions

That book deals with the 1st Cav. The flight platoons and ground forces were grouped together to work as one unit. The 119th was an assault helicopter company. Our operations were determined by what we were given as primary mission. The first and second flight plattoons each had eleven ships. The gun platoon had eight ships. Because of maintaince and other things we would have sixteen ships flyable in the lift platoons and five to six ships in the gun platoon. Primary mission would normal get ten ships from the lift platoons. That would mean going to Dak To and flying resupply and what ever for the 4th Inf. This would also include putting LRRPs [long range recon patrols] in not so nice places or pulling them out of not so nice places. Normal four gunships would be assigned with us in case we ran into trouble. The other slicks would be assigned to whatever unit needed a ship for a day. You might have to fly some VIPs around or haul parts for the artilery units. The remaining gunships would fly convoy cover and be on stand-by. The missions away from the primary mission were called "milk runs". Not very hard or dangerous. Every sixty days they would rotate us with another unit so we would get a new primary mission. We would end up working with the ARVINs or flying SOG missions for the Special Forces group. There were also other units of the 4th Inf. who were stationed around Kontum and over by LZ Oasis. We would pull CAs [combat assaults] about every ten days or so. That was basical putting troops into an area so they could recon the area or try to make contact with the enemy. Our days were between ten to twelve hours of flying. The maintaince on the ship would take one to two hours. About every third or fourth night you would have to pull guard duty. So you learned to function on three hours sleep a night eat most of your meals out of a can and keep track of how many days you had left before you could go home.
