Carl Duke, affectionately know as "Duke", and pictured in the photo album - 119th - with Macy was the subject of a good story. We were just pulling out of a hot LZ when we heard on the radio that a gunner had been hit. A few minutes later we heard it was Duke. This was not good news as you can imagine. The flight back was very quiet -not the usual chatter. We received no further information about Duke. When we returned to Holloway as we landed in our revetment, I noticed Dukes ship flying by into his revetment. I can't remember the A/C's name. I said to the guys, hey they must have made a quick trip to the hospital! Just then Duke comes out of the ship with a sheepish look on his face. We immediately knew he was alright, so we started in on him. Duke are you dead? No. Where are you hit. He sat down on the ship and pulled up his pant leg. About half way up his shin was a small bloody mark about the size of a splinter. A round had ricocheted off his gun mount sending small pieces of metal flying into the ship. We all stood there without saying a word. Then we all backed up a few steps and started howling. We laughed so hard we had tears. Poor ole Duke never lived it down. There wasn't a day that went by that someone didn't ask him if he had received his Purple Heart yet.
