The hobby shop sounds like a good idea. Did you ever see anyone flying R/C while you were there ? I use to fly control line stuff and had a pretty big R/C glider when I was in Germany. Had fun with it... As kids we use to fly control line with the neighbor down the hill from us. He would come out with his plane and a hot glue gun. By the end of the day he had the biggest motor he could find on the plane, so that he could get the grossly overweight hunk of wood and glue to fly..... he was a "get a bigger hammer" kind of guy heheh....
