I sure did, Paul-

and a Lumpkin County (hosts the US Army Ranger School), and Parks, and Libraries, and Schools, etc..., my Four Bears were very prolific, and apparently made like bunnies...

the first "New World" documentation of the family name (Jacob Lumpy)has been traced to 1640 in the Virginia Tidewater, not far from Jamestown and Williamsburg.and Ol' Cap'n Jake (he was Militia) passed in 1708. He'd sold his plantation, "Newington" to the father of Carter Braxton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. They (Braxtons and Lumpkins) are interred at Mattaponi Baptist Church. I have a copy of Jacob's epitaph here somewhere. I gotta go down there and get a rubbing of his tombstone, which is about 36" x 72", and flat on the ground. it's all in Latin, and quite impressive (to me). It speaks of a good soldier, gracious host, and fearer of God.

Jacob was a supporter of Bacon in the Rebellion of 1676, the First American Revolution, which we lost...

Atlanta was named after a Lumpkin. Wilson (rode the first train from Danville, VA into the new southern wilderness, and at the end of the line for that period, the town of Terminus grew rapidly. He became the first GA guv'ner, and his daughter, Martha, was the person for whom Terminus was renamed Marthasville .. as it grew into a little teeming metropolis (for the early 1800s), the local debutantes apparently thought "M-ville" was a bit drab. Martha's middle name was Atalana. The locals just misspelled and mispronounced it.

There were prominent doctors, lawyers (ugh!), professors, soldiers and judges in the family tree. One is reputed to have implemented driving the Cherokee and Seminole out of Georgia, I'm sad to say. Class dismissed.

I sell fence. ::f

True. So- where's MY money? :)
