I was loking through some old letters my uncle worte home from his tour. The earliest from Viet Nam are dated March of 1964, so he was indeed there very early in the war. One letter I read mentioned that the tail from his ship was removed. He was talking about a new radio that was being installed that was over a hundred pounds and that the room near his gun would be limited now. Also mentioned removing the bipod and front sight of the M-60. Sorry for rambling..
