Re: more SCORPION and SNOOPY

I should try to get a few more pictures scanned. There are a couple of one of the setups and the "modern" version of the snoopy machine, the condensation nuclei detector, in the photo album. I remember early versions did run the hose through the bubble and no one liked that very much. Certainly the pilots didn't like it and we didn't like it because it was a pain to install and remove. Taping it to the skids was the preferred method and that also served to get closer to the tree tops where the best readings could be gathered. It was also more convenient positioning for the power hookup in the ceiling on one door side of a huey. As we evolved to Loaches, a special door was fashioned that allowed the operator, me, to occupy the co-pilot seat with the meters on a bracket on the door. The door did not have plexi-glass and was open in order to shoot and drop grenades, etc. The chase ship by the way evolved to a tear gas machine. It carried tear gas ordinance on customized pods (remember this was a Loach) that consisted of a thousand or so 35mm cans of tear gas in a cannister that broke apart when deployed. That was also very effective... we'd get them running into trees and set up for the gunships. I dropped mostly smoke, thermite, or WP depending on what we found. Mark it with smoke, ignite it with thermite, or blow it up with WP and leave a nice billow for air support to target.

Not sure when the enemy figured out our patterns and I did not see the "flyers" myself, but was told that Intelligence had discovered such "flyers" with our flight pattern and mission behaviors clearly illustrated... It was described to me as a "wanted poster".. that was in the same time frame as when I served in Dak To (late 1968), but don't know any specifics. I think I was told up front that the missions were voluntary because they were dangerous... and in the early days, our mission included finding enough stuff to convince people that the equipment worked... it did and we did and that's when I started going out every day... there was always something to check out from other intelligence sources, always. There were limitations though... e.g. if there had been recent action, such as an air strike or fire fight, in the AO, I'd pick that up and basically couldn't smell anything else unless it started shooting at me. But there was plenty of "clean" jungle to sniff.
