Smell? The whole damn country smelled. From the minute they opened the doors of the aircraft until the time you climbed aboard the Freedom Bird the smell of RVN was everywhere. The carp being burnt was the first thing to hit you. The combination of desiel fuel and human waste in the morning air is something I will always remember. The aroma from the rice paddies in the dry season was also an air that could bring tears to your eyes. The mildew of your clothes during the rainy season. The jungle with the dead grass and the sulphar from the gun powder after the boys with the big guns had shelled an area. The burnt wood smell in the LZ after a B-52 strike. The smell of gun powder from your M-60. That and the metal smell your barrel had after a thousand rounds going through it. The exhaust of the ships while you were refueling. The sandbags that were rotting in the walls of the revetments. The smell of the grunts just blended in with everything else. The thing I remember most is the looks on their faces. That stays with me even today. Some of the bravest men I will ever know are the ones who rode on my ship. George my hat goes off to you and your brothers in the 4th Inf. Div.
