Re: Battle of Dak To
In Response To: Battle of Dak To ()

Tom, look for "The Long Gray Line" by Rick Atkinson, and "Dak To" by ... I forget. Both have a lot about the Battle of Dak To. Also David Hackworth's first book, I forget the name. Three very different ways of telling a similar story, but all three very interesting reads.

Butch Lammers, Bill Frakes, Jimmy Johnson all were up to their hips in it, 1967. 4th Inf, 173rd Abn, I forget who else. By November 1968, they had all extended and we were together in Dak To. As each day passed they would talk about that day the year before... I wish I had paid attention and written all or at least some of it down.

One of those books talks of wounded on both sides being cared for humanely by the other side then left in the open for their own to recover... early in the fight.

By the end of what obviously turned into a brutal battle, a shot-down Huey crew (I don't know whose) was found lashed to trees several days after being captured by the goddam dinks. They'd been skinned. I think it might be in Atkinson's book.

Ugly, ugly stuff.

Bob
