The story of the Huey crew might have come from something that happened with the 1st Cav. Robert Mason's book Chickenhawk relasts the story of a gunship crew which were skinned and hung in a tree.
From some of the accounts of what happened at LZ Albany and later stories I have to believe that although there may have been some good in the enemy's ranks alot more evil was present. I for one never considered surrender. I don't think air crews were their favorite people. Most of the guys in the flight platoon when I got there had taken part in the battle of Dak To. They taught me a lot. My gunner Francis Hightower was the best instructor I had. What he taught me helped me to make it back to the world.
