Mine was not near as dramatic, but I remember (once while we were at Lane field in Feb 67) trading for four brand new 81 MM Mortars, 2 60 MM mortars and a 90 MM recoil less rifle. When I got to Pleiku I was nose low CG due to fuel burn off. I then gave the 4 81s to Bn. to replace some aging againg stock. We kept 1 60 MM for the 545th (our own flares!) and traded one 60 MM to the AF at Pleiku AFB for 15 Cotl Combat Masterpiece revolvers which got me in good with the CO and several Aircraft Commanders and platoon leaders.
Another trade was with the 4th division. I eneded up with my own 30 KWT Generator and used it to run a coffee pot (and provide emergency power) till it was grabbed by BN HQ.
Somedays scrounging was fun. Once, one of my NCOs hijacked a truck load of soada during a mission to Qui Nhon. We had good trading material after that. But that's another story..
