I'm not sure if you guys are aware of it but Quinn was a good pilot. He had a civilian license and owned a Navion (L-17). Anyway one day following a test flight, we came in and landed. I had one arm on the window and the other holding the hand strap on the overhead console. It was obvious to the ground personnel that Quin was flying the chopper. It was also obvious to the major (I had not seen him). The troops looked at Quinn with new respect and the major reamed me a new one. He let me know that until the army put pilot wings on the NCOs They were not the pilots but the tech recorder on test flights. Anyway I think he knew I was giving Quinn some stick time to let him keep up his pilot skills and I was also letting the troops know that their shop foreman was a pilot to be trusted.(He later moved to the first sgt slot and was promoted to E8). After that I always took a hard look before I gave the controls to one of the troops and when I did I made sure I kept my hands close to the controls so the old man could not assume I was not flying. I did not need another field stripping.
